PUR Glue

PUR Glue

PUR glue comes in various forms to suit different application needs. It is available in cartridges, buckets, and drums, allowing for flexibility in usage. The color of PUR glue can be neutral, transparent, or white, making it suitable for applications where aesthetics are important. For instance, in furniture manufacturing, a transparent PUR glue can be used to bond wooden components without leaving visible adhesive residue, maintaining the natural appearance of the wood.

PUR Glue

PUR glue, or polyurethane reactive adhesive, is a reactive adhesive designed for high-performance and permanent bonding applications. Unlike conventional thermoplastic hot melt adhesives, PUR glue forms an initial bond after application and continues to cure through a reaction with moisture, creating a crosslinked adhesive structure.

Our PUR glue can be formulated for different substrates and production conditions, including wood, plastics, metals, textiles and composite materials. The formulation can be adjusted according to the application method, equipment, substrate, open time and required curing behavior. Our company has more than 20 years of experience developing EVA and PUR hot melt adhesive systems.

For our broader PUR hot melt adhesive solutions, see PUR Hot Melt Glue.

Strong and Durable Bonding

PUR glue forms a high-strength bond that can withstand mechanical stress and demanding environmental conditions. After moisture curing, the crosslinked bond provides long-term structural stability.

Moisture and Environmental Resistance

PUR adhesives are selected for applications where resistance to humidity, water, temperature changes or chemical exposure is important.

Flexible Bond Line

The cured adhesive remains flexible, helping absorb movement and stress between different bonded materials.

Reactive Curing

PUR glue initially sets after application and then continues to cure through reaction with atmospheric or substrate moisture. This distinguishes it from conventional EVA hot melt adhesives, which primarily solidify through cooling.

Suitable for Industrial Processing

Different PUR grades can be developed for automated production, roll coating, spraying, extrusion or other suitable application systems, depending on the formulation.

Technical Specifications

PUR adhesive performance varies by grade and application. The following parameters should therefore be treated as product-selection parameters, not one universal specification.

Parameter Specification / Selection
Chemistry Polyurethane Reactive (PUR)
Appearance Solid reactive hot melt
Color Transparent / Natural / White / Grade dependent
Application Temperature Grade dependent
Viscosity Grade dependent; selected according to application equipment
Open Time Grade dependent
Initial Setting Typically seconds after application, depending on formulation
Moisture Curing Continues after initial setting through reaction with moisture
Final Cure Formulation and environmental conditions dependent
Heat Resistance Grade dependent
Moisture Resistance High-performance grades available
Packaging Grade-dependent cartridges, bags, buckets or drums

The current PUR product information on our site also uses application-specific specifications rather than treating all PUR products as one formulation. For example, the PUR bookbinding grade lists a different viscosity and softening point from other PUR applications.

For accurate production settings, always use the technical data sheet of the selected PUR grade.

How PUR Glue Cures?

PUR glue uses a two-stage bonding process.

Initial Setting

After the adhesive is applied in molten form, it cools and develops initial handling strength. This allows the bonded components to remain in position during production.

Moisture Reaction

After initial setting, the reactive groups in the PUR adhesive continue to react with moisture from the surrounding environment or bonded substrates.

Final Crosslinking

The moisture-curing reaction forms a crosslinked structure that provides the finished bond with improved durability, flexibility and resistance to environmental stress.

For applications requiring faster processing, see our Fast Curing PUR Adhesive.

PUR Glue Application Methods

The right application method depends on the adhesive grade, equipment and substrate.

Hot Melt Application

PUR reactive hot melt adhesives are commonly applied using suitable heated adhesive equipment.

Roll Coating

Roll coating can provide controlled and uniform adhesive application on compatible substrates and continuous production lines.

Spraying

Spray application can be used for selected PUR formulations where a controlled coating pattern is required.

Before production, the adhesive should be tested with the actual machine, substrate and application conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PUR glue the same as EVA hot melt adhesive?

No. EVA primarily bonds through cooling and solidification, while PUR continues to chemically cure after initial setting.

What is PUR glue used for?

PUR glue is used in furniture, woodworking, automotive, packaging, bookbinding and other industrial bonding applications where durable and environmentally resistant bonds are required.

Does PUR glue require special equipment?

Many PUR hot melt applications require equipment that controls the adhesive’s exposure to moisture. The exact equipment depends on the adhesive grade and application.

How long does PUR glue take to cure?

Initial setting can occur within seconds, while final moisture curing takes longer and depends on the adhesive formulation and environmental conditions. For specific PUR applications, curing requirements can vary considerably. The dedicated PUR bookbinding product, for example, states a 24–72 hour moisture-curing period.

Can PUR glue be customized?

Yes. Formulations can be adjusted according to substrate, viscosity, open time, application temperature, equipment and required performance.

What is the MOQ for customized PUR glue?

The minimum order quantity for customized hot melt adhesive products is 100 kg.
