EVA Bookbinding Adhesive
What Is EVA Bookbinding Adhesive?
EVA bookbinding adhesive is a hot melt adhesive specially designed for book binding, magazines, catalogs and notepads. It fuses the temperature of the book block, flows into the spine and sets in seconds, providing every book block with a clean, durable bond that will withstand shipping, shelving and daily handling.
This is the most popular adhesive used in commercial bookbinding for good reason: no drying time, no solvents, no complex clean up. Fill it in your glue pot, run your line and the books are bound. It is compatible with all binding machines (Kolbus, Müller Martini, Horizon) and can be used for light offset paper to lightly coated magazine stocks.
If you are printing books in volume and your current adhesive is leading to spine failures, open time inconsistencies and cold-weather cracking, a better-matched EVA bookbinding adhesive will cure all three.
If you do not know your machine model and paper spec, we will be able to recommend the appropriate grade and send a sample for free within 48 hours.
Why Your Books Deserve Better Adhesive?

Typical bookbinding problems include poor adhesion to coated or laminated paper, open time that is not matched to the substrate, and cracking of the spine during storage or shipment. When the right grade of EVA bookbinding adhesive is used for the substrate, machine and production environment, these problems can be solved.
Books that stay bound, even in the cold
Hot melt adhesive is not suitable for cold storage and distribution because it becomes brittle before the book even gets to the reader. Whether you’re sending the books across the country or storing them in an unheated warehouse over the winter, our EVA bookbinding adhesive is flexible down to –15°C.
Open time matched to your line speed
Open time refers to the duration that the adhesive remains workable after it is applied and it must be exactly the same cycle speed as your machine. If it is too short, the cover will not adhere and if it is too long, the book will come out of the clamp before the spine has set. We offer three grades (4-8 sec, 8-14 sec and 14-20 sec) so that your bindery can operate at the speed for which it was designed—not the speed of the adhesive.
Clean adhesion on coated stocks
Some of the most popular stocks used in commercial print, and some of the most difficult for standard EVA to adhere to, are gloss covers, matte laminated covers and coated interior papers. We use a terpene phenolic tackifier in our formulation that achieves peel strength of more than 2.8 N/mm on coated stocks without a primer or surface treatment.
Low odor, safer for your team
Operators are breathing what the glue pot emits when they run a binding line for 8 hours a day. Our low-VOC formulation complies with CARB Phase II requirements, which are much lower VOC emissions than conventional EVA hot melts, and will make the bindery floor a better place to work and keep you compliant with the ever-stringent air quality regulations in European and North American markets.

The Books It Binds

EVA bookbinding adhesive is the right choice for any operation producing the following:
Paperback books & trade paperbacks
Paperback books are the main application of EVA bookbinding adhesive, ranging from fiction and non-fiction to academic titles. The adhesive forms a spine that lasts through the supply chain (from bindery to distributor warehouse to bookshop shelf) and through years of reading. Can be used for runs of a few hundred to millions of copies.
Magazines & journals
Magazines that exceed 48 pages require a spine adhesive that is quick setting and flat. EVA bookbinding adhesive provides a sharp, uniform spine finish at high line speeds, ensuring your magazine is ready to look its best on the newsstand and remains intact during postal distribution.
Product catalogs & corporate brochures
EVA hot melt adhesive provides product catalogs and corporate brochures with the durable, flexible spine they need to survive repeated handling, mailing and years on a shelf, including on gloss and matte laminated covers.
Softcover textbooks & workbooks
Textbooks are opened hundreds of times in a school year. EVA bookbinding adhesive can handle the heavy book blocks typical of textbooks—300 to 600pp—and holds the spine together under daily use that lesser adhesives will not tolerate.
Notepads & notebooks
For the production of notepad & notebook, EVA hot melt adhesive is applied to the side/spine edge of the collated pad. The controlled viscosity prevents bleed-through on lightweight interior stocks and the flexible bond allows sheets to be cleanly torn out without pulling the spine apart.
Reports, proposals & short-run corporate publications
Corporate documents printed on digital perfect binders—proposals, financial reports, conference materials—need a professional-looking spine that will hold together in the short-term. EVA bookbinding adhesive adheres well to toner fused digital print substrates, and provides a clean finish even for runs of 50 copies.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the color of the adhesive affect the finished book?
For most perfect bound books, the EVA bookbinding adhesive is completely hidden in the spine, so color has no visual impact. Where it matters is with exposed spine binding styles or notepad side gluing where you can see a thin line of adhesive at the edge—clear or white grades are preferred in those cases. Amber grades are functionally identical and typically used where appearance is not a concern.
Is it compatible with laminated or UV-coated covers?
If the cover is highly laminated or UV coated, then PUR adhesive is the more powerful choice. Our high tack EVA grade bonds with no primer and is reliable for lightly laminated stocks and matte aqueous coatings (most commercial print work).
Can it be used on both automatic and semi-automatic machines?
Yes. EVA bookbinding adhesive is used on fully automatic high speed lines and entry level semi-automatic binders. Cycle times vary, such as on semi-automatic machines. A slightly longer open time grade allows for more tolerance to operator to operator variation while still maintaining bond quality.
What causes spine cracking or pages falling out?
The leading causes are: improper open time grade for your line speed, glue pot temperature below the recommended temperature range, or using a standard EVA grade in cold storage environments. All three are formulation and setup issues, not random failures And all three are fixable with the right product and settings.
What is the shelf life and how should the adhesive be stored?
Shelf life is 18 months from the date of manufacture when stored below 30°C in a cool, dry environment out of direct sunlight and away from moisture. Once opened, reclose and consume within 6 months. Do not store near open flame or high-heat equipment, and avoid stacking heavy loads on top of pillow-form product as deformation affects feed consistency.
